한국 또는 어딘가의 내 땅으로부터 새로운 국가로 옮겨 살아본다는 것은 쉬운 것은 아닙니다. 10년 전, 어느날 저는 갑작스럽게 캐나다로 이민을 오게 되면서 참 우여곡절이 많았는데요. 10년을 살고보니, 우리가 캐나다에 대해서먼 다른 나라에서부터 자세하고 정확한 정보를 얻기란 생각보다 어렵다는 것을 알았습니다.

캐나다에 가기로 마음은 잘 먹죠? 저도 그랬어요. 그러나 비행기에서 내리면 설렘과 동시에 막막함이 밀려오죠? 공항에서부터 이미 당황하면서 캐나다 첫 발을 시작하게됩니다.
(Most people make the decision to come to Canada with excitement and high hopes — I did, too. But let’s be honest: once you get off that plane, the excitement quickly turns into confusion. From the moment you land at the airport, you might find yourself overwhelmed.)

일단 언어가 다릅니다. ‘영어는 학창시절 저의 최악의 점수를 맛보게 해준 과목이었습니다.’
(First, the language is different. ‘English was my weakest subject in school — true story.’)
그리고.. 아는 사람도 없습니다. ‘알던 사이도 막상 오게되면 원수가 되어 흩어지는 경우를 많이 봤습니다.’
(Second, you probably don’t know anyone. ‘And trust me, even people you think you know can feel like strangers once you get here.’
아는 것도 없습니다. ‘그러니까 많은 책과 블로그, 또는 동영상을 접하시고 도착하시길 바랍니다.’

10년 전, 두근두근하면서도 “이제 뭘 먼저 해야 하지?” 하는 생각이 머리를 꽉 채웠던 기억이 납니다.

관광으로 오시는 분들은 나중에 캐나다 관광에 대한 글이 올라왔을 때 자세히 봐주시면 감사하겠습니다. 관광비자(Visitor Visa)로 캐나다에 입국한 경우에는 SIN 번호를 발급받을 수 없고, 필요하지도 않습니다. 관광 목적의 단기 체류자에게는 일할 권한이 없기 때문에 SIN 번호 자체가 해당되지 않아요. 그래도 혹시 모를 나중을 대비해서 보고싶다? 그렇다면 더욱 읽어주시면 너무나 감사하겠습니다.

첫 번째!
‘SIN 번호(Social Insurance Number)’ 발급입니다.

SIN 번호가 뭔지, 왜 필요한지, 어떻게 신청하는지 하나하나 쉽게 알려드릴게요.

SIN 번호란?
SIN은 Social Insurance Number 의 약자입니다.
(SIN stands for Social Insurance Number.)
캐나다에서 일하고, 세금 신고하고, 정부 서비스를 이용하려면 반드시 필요한 신분 번호입니다.
(It’s a mandatory identification number in Canada if you want to work, file taxes, or access any government services.)
한국의 주민등록번호와 비슷하지만, 좀 더 실용 중심입니다. 9자리 숫자로 구성되어 있으며, 당연히? 캐나다 정부에서 발급해줍니다.

첫 번째 숫자는 단순한 숫자가 아니라 그 사람이 어떤 신분으로 SIN을 받았는지, 또는 어떤 지역에서 발급받았는지를 나타냅니다. (신분으로 표현해서 웃기긴 하지만, 실제로 이민자들끼리나 유학생모두 캐나다 신분 어쩌구 얘기를 많이 하게됩니다.)
Interestingly, the first digit of your SIN isn’t just a random number.
It can indicate what kind of status you held when your SIN was issued, or which region you got it in. (Okay, I know saying “status” sounds a bit funny, but if you’ve ever lived in Canada as an immigrant or international student, you’ll know — we talk about our “Canadian status” all the time. )

표가 보이죠? 저도 처음에 받을 때에는 9였습니다. 임시 외국인 노동자나 신분 미확정자가 갖는 숫자였는데요, 지금은BC주에 사는 캐나다영주권자로서 7을 갖고 있습니다.
(You saw the chart, right? When I first received my SIN, it actually started with a 9 — a number typically assigned to temporary foreign workers or individuals with an unclear status in Canada. But now, as a permanent resident living in British Columbia, my SIN starts with a 7.)
참고할 것으로는
• 임시 SIN은 보통 워크 퍼밋 만료일과 같은 날짜로 유효기간이 설정됩니다.
• 퍼밋을 연장하면 SIN도 함께 갱신해야 합니다.
• SIN 번호만 보고 고용주가 신분을 유추할 수 있습니다.

For example:
- When you get a job, you’ll need to provide your SIN to sign the contract and receive your salary.
- You also need it for filing taxes, receiving your T4 slip, and getting tax refunds.
- If you lose your job, your SIN is required to apply for EI (Employment Insurance).
- When you retire, it’s used to access CPP (Canada Pension Plan).
- You’ll also need it for various government benefits.

입니다. 아까 말했듯이 관광비자(Visitor Visa)로 캐나다에 입국한 경우에는 SIN 번호를 발급받을 수 없고, 필요하지도 않습니다.
Who Needs a SIN Number?
- A Permanent Resident (PR)
- A Canadian Citizen
- A Working Holiday visa holder or Temporary Work Permit holder
- An International Student (in certain cases — especially if you’re working off-campus)
As mentioned earlier, if you are in Canada on a Visitor Visa, you cannot get a SIN number — and you don’t need one, either. SIN numbers are only issued to individuals who are legally authorized to work in Canada.

If someone offers to get a SIN for you in exchange for money or asks for your personal information, it’s very likely a scam. Always apply directly through official channels — Service Canada.
SIN 번호는 어디서 어떻게 신청하나요?
SIN은 총 3가지 방법으로 신청할 수 있습니다:
- 온라인
- 우편 신청
- 오프라인(직접 방문)
오프라인 신청 (Service Canada 센터 방문)
가장 빠르고 확실한 방법입니다. 직접 방문하면, 문제가 없을 경우 즉시 당일 발급받을 수 있어요.
1. 가까운 Service Canada 센터를 방문
2. 신청서 작성
3. 신분증 및 관련 서류 제출
4. 담당자의 확인 후 바로 SIN 번호 발급
준비물
• 유효한 비자 문서 (예: Work Permit, Study Permit, PR 카드 등)
• 여권

If everything is in order, you can receive your SIN number on the same day.
Steps:
1. Visit your nearest Service Canada Centre
2. Fill out the application form
3. Submit your ID and supporting documents
4. After verification, you’ll be issued your SIN number immediately
What to Bring:
• A valid immigration document (e.g. Work Permit, Study Permit, PR card)
• Your passport
• For temporary residents: your permit must include the phrase
"May work" or "May accept employment"
• Your Canadian address, parents’ full names in English, and a Canadian phone number (optional)
Note: Some Service Canada locations require an appointment, so make sure to check before visiting.
우편 신청
일부 지역이나 특별한 상황에서는 우편으로도 신청할 수 있습니다. 다만, 온라인 또는 방문 신청보다 느리고 불편하지만 가끔 이게 더 편하신 분들을 위해,

우리가 한국에서도 아무한테나 주민등록번호를 공유하지는 않죠?
그러니까..
• 절대 이메일, 문자, SNS 등으로 SIN 번호를 전달하지 마세요
• 온라인 이력서나 구직사이트에 SIN 번호를 기재하지 마세요
• 고용주, 은행 등 공식 기관에만 제공하세요
• 분실 시 즉시 Service Canada에 연락해 재발급 또는 보호 조치 필요

What Should You Be Careful About When Managing Your SIN?

이 모든걸 시행할 때 중요한 거주지 설정도 만만치 않습니다.
