캐나다 정착의 두 번째 단계, “전화번호 만들기!”

지난번 포스팅에서는 SIN 번호 발급 방법에 대해 이야기했었죠.
(In my previous post, I talked about how to apply for a SIN number — one of the first steps in starting life in Canada.)
그만큼 중요한 것이 또 하나 있습니다.
(But there’s another thing that’s just as important.)
요즘은 없어서는 안 될 핸드폰!

이제 그 아이에게 전화번호를 만들어줘야 하지 않겠습니까?
(You’ve got to give that little guy a Canadian phone number, don’t you?)
10년 전, 제가 처음 캐나다에 왔을 때 한 달 동안 정말 불편했던 기억이 있어요.
(When I first came to Canada about ten years ago, I remember struggling for almost a month.)
이유가 뭐였을까요?
(Why?)
바로 캐나다 전화번호가 없어서 아무것도 할 수 없었던 것이었어요.
(Because I didn’t have a Canadian phone number, and I couldn’t do anything without it!)
한국에서도 마찬가지로, 본인 인증이나 각종 서비스 이용을 위해 전화번호가 꼭 필요하잖아요.
(Just like in Korea, you need a phone number for identity verification, online services, and daily life in general.)
그래서 이번엔 캐나다 생활 필수템 중 하나인 전화 요금제 가입 방법에 대해 알려드리려고 합니다.
(So in this post, let’s talk about one of the absolute essentials for newcomers — how to get a Canadian phone plan.)
캐나다 주요 통신사
(Major Canadian telecom companies)
한국에 주요 통신사 ‘빅3’가 있죠? 바로 SK텔레콤, KT, LG유플러스.
( In South Korea, there are the major “Big 3” telecom companies: SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus.)
지금도 맞으려나요? 저는 10년전에 넘어왔으니까 한국의 정보가 틀리더라도 어여쁘게 넘어가주시면 감사하겠습니다.
( I’m not sure if this is still exactly the same today since I moved here 10 years ago, so if some info about Korea is a bit outdated, I hope you’ll kindly understand!)
캐나다 통신사에도 대형 3사가 있습니다.
바로 Rogers, Bell, Telus인데요.
이 세 회사가 전국적인 통신망을 갖추고 있어서 안정적인 서비스와 다양한 요금제를 제공하고 있답니다.
( In Canada, there are also three big telecom companies — Rogers, Bell, and Telus.
These three have nationwide networks, providing reliable service and a variety of plans.)
즉, 캐나다의 Rogers, Bell, Telus는 한국의 SK텔레콤, KT, LG유플러스와 같은 대형 통신사라고 생각하시면 돼요!
(So, you can think of Rogers, Bell, and Telus in Canada as the equivalent of SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus in Korea — the major players in each country’s telecom market!
아래 그림처럼 캐나다에는 여러 통신사가 있지만, 앞에서 말한 대형 3사와 저가 브랜드로 나뉩니다.
(As shown in the picture below, there are many telecom companies in Canada, but they are mainly divided into the three major carriers mentioned earlier and budget brands.)

그래서 저는 뭐 쓰냐구요?
( So, what do I use? )
저는 Fido를 씁니다.
(FIDO~~)
그 이유는 처음 캐나다에 왔을 때에는 영주권자가 아직 아니었기 때문에 한국으로 곧 돌아갈 사람이었기 때문에 그랬습니다.
그리고 그때는 20대 초반이라 돈도 충분하지 않았기 때문에 그나마 제일 저렴한 통신사를 찾다보니 시작을 Fido를 하게되었던거 같아요.
(The reason is, when I first came to Canada, I wasn’t a permanent resident yet and was planning to return to Korea soon. Also, I was in my early 20s back then and didn’t have much money, so I looked for the most affordable carrier and ended up starting with Fido.)
그리고는 결혼하고서도 꾸준히 Fido를 썼는데요. 저렴한 편이기도 하고 주기적으로 이벤트를 많이 열어주기도 했어요. 한국처럼 2년 약정으로 하게 되면 새 폰을 얻을 수도 있고 뭐 그런 이런 저런 혜택이 있었다보니 10년동안 이렇게 쓰고 있었네요?
아무튼 그러면 왜 가성비 좋게 쓸 수가 있냐~ 궁금하죠?
(Even after I got married, I’ve continued to use Fido. It’s pretty cheap and they often have promotions. Just like in Korea, if you sign a 2-year contract, you can get a new phone and other benefits. Because of these perks, I’ve been with them for about 10 years now!
Anyway, you might be wondering, how can it be so cost-effective?)
한국에도 선불제 개념이 있는걸로 알고 있어요.
한국에서 써본적은 없지만 가끔 역으로 캐나다에서 한국 놀러가시는 언니분들 보면 그렇게 하시는것 같더라구요.
저는 나중에 알려드리겠지만 한국의 대형 통신사 KT에서 작년부터 한국 번호도 갖고 있기로 했습니다. 이건 나중에 알려드릴게요.
(I believe Korea also has a prepaid system.
I haven’t personally used it in Korea, but I’ve noticed that some of my sisters who visit Korea from Canada sometimes use prepaid plans there.
Later on, I’ll tell you more, but since last year, I’ve also kept a Korean phone number with KT, one of the major carriers in Korea. I’ll share more about that another time!)

아무튼 캐나다에도 선불제와 후불제가 있다는거!
그래서 처음 오신 분들은 Prepaid(선불 요금제) 로 시작하는 걸 추천드려요.
신용점수가 없는 상태에서도 바로 개통이 가능하고, 나중에 정착이 안정되면 Postpaid(후불 요금제) 로 전환하기도 쉬워요.
저처럼~
(Anyway, in Canada, there are both prepaid and postpaid plans!
So for newcomers, I recommend starting with a prepaid plan.
You can get started right away even without a credit score, and once you’ve settled in, it’s easy to switch to a postpaid plan later on — just like I did!)

그래서 저는 뭘 추천하냐구요?
(So, what do I recommend?)
음.. 사실 직접 매장에 들러보면서 요금제를 확인해보는거를 제일 추천해요.
(Honestly, I highly recommend going to the stores in person to check out the plans yourself.)
왜냐면 그때그때마다 프로모션도 다르고 하다보니 매번 가격이 똑같은 것도 아니고, 데이터 용량 뭐 이런것도 유지되는게 아니기때문에 근처 몰에 가서 직접 확인해보는걸 추천합니다.
( The reason is that promotions change all the time, prices aren’t always the same, and data allowances can vary. So, it’s best to visit a nearby mall or store and see the pamphlets for yourself.)
각각 매장마다 팜플랫이 있거든요? 저는 나이가 조금 있다보니.. 인터넷으로만 비교하는 것보다는 직접 가서 팜플랫 다 챙겨온 이후에 비교해보기도 하고, 젊은 아이들인척 GPT를 이용해서 물어보기도 하는데, 직접 가서 보는게 저는 마음이 편하더라구요.
(Each store usually has pamphlets, and since I’m a bit older, I feel more comfortable comparing plans this way rather than just browsing online. Sometimes I even pretend to be a younger person and ask GPT for advice, but in the end, visiting the stores is what works best for me.)
그래도 대략적으로는 알려드려야 오시기 전에 마음을 조금 잡고 오시려나요?
(Still, I’ll give you a rough idea so you can get an idea before you come.)
그래서 살짝의 팁만 적어봅니다.
(Here are some quick tips)
데이터 사용량은 Wi-Fi가 많은 도시에서는 4~8GB 정도면 충분하고, 요즘은 eSIM을 지원해서 매장에 가지 않고도 온라인으로 간편하게 개통할 수 있어요. 다만, 도심 외곽 지역에 거주하신다면 Freedom Mobile 같은 저가 통신사의 신호가 약할 수 있으니 커버리지 확인이 필요해요. 개통 시에는 대부분 여권만으로 가능하지만, 일부 매장에서는 SIN 번호를 요구하기도 하니 참고하세요.
(If you live in a city with lots of WiFi, 4 to 8 GB of data is usually enough. These days, many carriers support eSIM, so you can set up your phone online without even going to the store. However, if you live outside the city center, budget carriers like Freedom Mobile might have weak signals, so be sure to check coverage. Most stores let you sign up with just your passport, but some may ask for your SIN number, so keep that in mind.)
가성비를 중시한다면 Fido, Koodo, Freedom Mobile 같은 저가 브랜드를 추천드리고, 보통 4GB에서 10GB 플랜을 월 30~40달러 사이에 이용할 수 있어요.
(If you want good value for money, I recommend budget brands like Fido, Koodo, and Freedom Mobile. You can usually get plans with 4 to 10 GB of data for around $30 to $40 per month.)
반면, 전국 어디서나 안정적인 통화 품질과 넓은 커버리지를 원하신다면 Telus, Bell, Rogers와 같은 대형 통신사를 선택하는 것이 좋습니다.
(On the other hand, if you want stable call quality and wide coverage across the country, it’s better to go with major carriers like Telus, Bell, or Rogers.)

캐나다 요금제 소개하다 말고 뭔 eSIM?
요즘 휴대폰이나 스마트워치에서 많이 듣게 되는 단어, eSIM!
처음 들어보시는 분들, 특히 저처럼 조금 나이가 있으신 분들은 “eSIM이 도대체 뭐야?” 하실 수도 있을 거예요.
(We were just talking about Canadian phone plans, and suddenly eSIM?
eSIM is a term you might be hearing a lot lately with smartphones and smartwatches!
If you’ve never heard of it before, especially if you’re a bit older like me, you might be wondering, “What on earth is eSIM?”)
eSIM이란?
eSIM은 내장된 디지털 SIM 카드라고 생각하시면 됩니다.
기존에 우리가 휴대폰에 넣던 작은 플라스틱 SIM 카드가 아니라, 휴대폰 안에 내장되어 있어서 물리적인 카드를 꽂지 않아도 통신 서비스를 사용할 수 있게 해주는 기술이에요.
(Think of an eSIM as a built-in digital SIM card.
Instead of the tiny plastic SIM card we usually put in our phones, an eSIM is embedded inside your device, so you don’t need to insert a physical card to use mobile service.)
eSIM 구하는 방법과 절차
(How to get and activate an eSIM)
통신사 확인: 먼저, 자신이 사용할 통신사가 eSIM 서비스를 지원하는지 확인해야 합니다. 요즘 캐나다 대형 통신사 대부분이 지원해요.
신청하기: 통신사 매장이나 온라인에서 eSIM 개통을 신청합니다. 온라인으로도 가능해서 굳이 매장에 갈 필요가 없죠!
QR 코드 받기: 신청하면 통신사에서 eSIM 프로파일이 담긴 QR 코드를 보내줍니다.
QR 코드 스캔: 휴대폰 설정에서 QR 코드를 스캔해 프로파일을 다운로드하면 바로 사용할 수 있어요.
설정 완료: 몇 번의 클릭만으로 전화번호와 데이터가 바로 활성화됩니다.
(Check with your carrier: First, make sure your carrier supports eSIM services. Most major Canadian carriers do these days.
Apply for eSIM: You can apply for eSIM activation at the carrier’s store or online. Since online activation is possible, you don’t have to visit the store in person!
Receive a QR code: After applying, the carrier will send you a QR code that contains the eSIM profile.
Scan the QR code: In your phone’s settings, scan the QR code to download the profile and start using the service right away.
